Plan Your Alaskan Holidays Around North America
Alaska is the biggest state of the United States of America, a huge wilderness of lakes, mountains, forests and a stunning coastline. For the outdoors enthusiast it is paradise, whether they are a hiker, fisherman, canoeist or any of a range of other adventurers. With great produce on offer in terms of game and seafood and stunning scenery to enjoy for more sedentary types, Alaska provides a wonderful choice of getaways for a wide variety of holidaymakers.
Getting Wild
Alaska’s size means that it is not hard to get away from civilization here. There are several national parks in the state, all of which are accessible to visitors. The interior of the state is often referred to as the ‘Last Frontier’ and there are landmarks from Alaska’s gold rush history still dotted all over the state. Denali National Park remains popular with visitors and contains America’s highest peak, still sometimes referred to as Mount McKinley rather than Denali.
All that space means that hiking and exploring are great fun, as well as quite challenging at times. It should always be remembered that Alaska is still wild, in a sense that not much of the rest of America still is and taking precautions when travelling is wise. Part of the thrill of Alaska trips is the sheer breadth of experience that is on offer.
Many might suspect that the weather on Alaska holidays would be cold and snowy, but this is only really true from September until May. The summer in the state can actually be very hot and the days are very long at this time of year too. At the time of the Summer Solstice, the town of Fairbanks in the interior of the state can expect 24 hours of daylight meaning that there is plenty of time for anyone enjoying adventure holidays to enjoy themselves.
Take To The Seas
The enormous coastline offers a huge range of opportunities for visitors to enjoy themselves. The more adventurous will certainly want to explore the area by sea kayak or canoe, but there are less active ways of getting out onto the water. Cruises run from major towns such as Anchorage and it is possible to take cruises that last days or even weeks. Finding things to see during that time is not hard in Alaska. Whales are almost guaranteed to turn up close to the vessel, whilst animals such as bears and sea lions can usually be viewed from a safe distance.
For anyone who wants to keep their feet on dry land, the state can also be explored on four wheels, as long as the right vehicle is hired. Wildlife can be spotted from the car, with moose and caribou being common sights. Bears and wolves are more furtive but are there to be seen on any trip into the wilderness. Adventure holidays to Alaska always provide a great chance to watch wildlife.
Alaska is a state that is full of possibilities. Less tamed and much bigger than any of the other 49 states of the Union, it is a destination for people who like fresh air, big skies and plenty of wild things to keep them busy.
